Lady Mustangs Split Friday Matches in Pomona Volleyball Tourney

Pomona, CA -- Western New Mexico University's Volleyball team dropped its first game of the season against the tournament host Cal Poly-Pomona, 3-0, but came back to avenge the sweep in the season opener, knocking off Western Oregon by the same margin in the first round of the Holiday Inn Select Tournament in Pomona, CA.

The Mustangs dropped the opening match 31-29, 30-20 and 30-27. WNMU's Stephanie Higgins (Biggsville, IL/) got 17 kills, while Megan Watson and Jennifer Snowbarger (Oskaloosa, IA/Oskaloosa High School) recorded 7 digs each in the losing effort. It was the second straight year that WNMU has been swept by Pomona in the season opener.

In WNMU's second game, the Mustangs used 17 kills and 10 digs by Stephanie Higgins (Biggsville, IL/) to help paste a 3-0 loss on Western Oregon.

The Mustangs, coached by one-time WOU leader Jim Callendar, dealt new Wolves coach Joe Houck a loss in his debut, 30-13, 30-24, 30-26. Match time was one hour and 20 minutes.

WNMU will face Cal State L.A. at noon Saturday, and will get Cal State Bakersfield at 4:30 pm.
